UNITED PAINTING ACADEMY

LABORATORY FOR SOCIAL DESIGN

The United Painting Academy was founded in order to gain a deeper understanding of the concept of impactful community artwork. By examining both our own projects and from others around the world, we seek to broaden the scope of our activities and share lessons learned to help avoid solitary struggle. The Academy combines strategy, program execution and sector research in order to structure and share the best practices of community art.

We measure the value of our work by the degree to which people benefit from it. But what exactly are the benefits, the potential effects, the desired approach and methodology necessary in order to create an outcome that is most beneficial? Developing metrics for our social commitment is essential to ensure our actions are having the desired positive impact.

In the past decade, art works have become a very popular tool for organisations, artists, cities and even governments to create contact and momentum within these communities and it's inhabitants. We feel a responsibility to look behind the - literally superficial - artwork on the surface. Developing metrics for our commitment is essential to ensure our actions are having the desired positive social impact: the United Painting Academy needs to investigate what happens ‘behind the coloured walls’.
